The Porsche 959 was built as a sports car first as a Group B rally car and later as a legal production car designed to satisfy FIA homologation regulations requiring that a minimum number of 200 street legal units be built. The 959 is the ultimate evolution of the Porsche 911 family form.
A reinforced centre-section with longitudinal side members formed a rigid safety cell. There was, in addition, an integral roll cage. Also new was variable four-wheel drive and race-derived suspension, endowing the 959 with immense performance and a top speed of 197mph.
